Not all carbon beds are equal. Grain size arbitrates between two competing variables: available adsorption surface and resistance to airflow. Carbon that is too fine offers enormous surface area but chokes the fan; carbon that is too coarse lets air — and the odour molecules riding on it — slip straight through. The 4mm grain used in the PureFilter is the compromise most experienced indoor growers settle on: long enough dwell time between loaded air and active material, with a pressure drop that a 600 to 900 m³/h inline fan can handle comfortably.
In practice, incoming air first passes the fabric pre-filter, which catches dust, particles and plant debris. It then travels radially into the carbon bed, where volatile organic compounds — terpenes, esters, aldehydes — are captured by physical adsorption on the surface of the micropores. Scrubbed of its olfactory signature, the air exits through the central core and is carried away by your Ø150mm ducting.
The activated carbon bed captures the terpenes and volatile organic compounds released during flowering. Your grow space stays discreet, even in a flat or a shared building.
Rated for 900 m³/h, this filter keeps airflow even without straining your extractor fan. The payoff: less noise, lower power draw and a grow tent that holds its temperature better.
150 mm is the growshop standard. The filter connects directly to any flexible, semi-rigid or aluminium Ø150mm ducting with two jubilee clips, mounted horizontally or vertically.
The fabric sleeve shields the carbon from dust and noticeably extends its working life. Slide it off, rinse it under clean water and refit it in under a minute.
Our extraction kits are specified and validated in France by our technical team. Every filter is paired with fans whose airflow curves we know precisely, so the combinations we recommend actually work.
Size it properly. The golden rule: your fan's rated airflow must stay at or below the filter's maximum. This PureFilter Ø150 — 900 m³/h comfortably covers inline fans from 600 to 890 m³/h. A more powerful fan would shorten contact time with the carbon and let odour through; an underpowered one would fail to refresh the air in your grow tent often enough.
Fit it correctly. Mount the filter inside the grow room, upstream of the fan, so loaded air is scrubbed before it reaches the impeller — which also protects the fan itself. Hang it from ratchet straps so no weight bears on the ducting, then clamp the outlet to the fan with a jubilee clip. Check every joint for leaks: a single unfiltered air path cancels out the whole filter.
Maintain it. Rinse the pre-filter under clean water every four to six weeks and let it dry fully before refitting. Never wash the carbon itself: moisture saturates the micropores and destroys adsorption capacity for good. Under typical use — 12 to 18 hours a day, relative humidity held between 40 and 60% — expect 12 to 18 months before replacement. The end-of-life signal is simple: a noticeable smell at the duct outlet, or a clear drop in airflow.
Ideally a Ø150mm inline fan rated between 600 and 890 m³/h. Avoid pairing this filter with a 1000 m³/h or larger fan, as air would rush through the bed and odour would escape.
How long does an activated carbon filter last?Twelve to eighteen months under normal use, running 12 to 18 hours a day. Three factors shorten that considerably: relative humidity above 65%, a clogged pre-filter that is never cleaned, and round-the-clock operation. Replace the filter as soon as a smell becomes noticeable at the extraction outlet — don't wait.
Should the filter go inside or outside the grow tent?Inside, on the intake side, in the vast majority of setups. The air is scrubbed before it passes through the fan, which protects the impeller and stops odour-loaded ducting from running through your room. Outlet-side mounting is possible when space is tight, but every joint upstream must then be perfectly sealed.
Can the pre-filter be washed and reused?Yes, and we strongly recommend it. The fabric sleeve slides straight off, rinses under clean water without detergent, and goes back on once completely dry. A clean pre-filter maintains airflow and appreciably extends the life of the carbon. The filter body and its carbon load, however, must never be washed.
