Why fan speed matters more than fan power

Plenty of growers oversize their extraction and then run it flat out. The outcome is predictable: a noisy room, humidity that collapses, a carbon filter worn out early, and plants transpiring harder than they should. Extraction is not a switch, it is a slider.

A correctly sized fan running at 40–50% of its capacity will do a better job than a smaller one screaming at maximum. It moves comparable air more slowly, more quietly, with fewer vibrations passing into the building fabric and less mechanical wear. The catch is that you need to be able to set that speed accurately — and return to it.

EC versus AC motors: what actually changes

A conventional AC motor is regulated by manipulating the voltage feeding it. At low speed the torque collapses, the motor heats up, hums and can begin to vibrate unpleasantly. That is why so many inexpensive AC speed controllers become unusable below a certain point.

An EC motor — electronically commutated — carries its own control electronics. Speed is driven by a signal rather than by starving the motor of voltage. The practical consequence is clear: regulation stays clean and stable across the whole range, including very low settings, without abnormal heating or that familiar buzz.

This controller is built for that second family, and it is worth being certain before you order. Wired to an AC-motor extractor it will not do its job. Check your fan's specification sheet, or ask us — it should state an EC motor explicitly.

VPD, humidity and odour: three reasons to fine-tune

The first is climate. Vapour pressure deficit depends on temperature and relative humidity, and extraction acts directly on both. Extraction that is too aggressive late in flower dries the air and closes stomata; extraction that is too weak lets humidity settle in and invites mould. The right setting sits between the two, and it moves as the cycle progresses.

The second is your carbon filter. A filter only neutralises odour properly if air passes through it at a speed compatible with its contact time. Forcing a fan through an undersized filter sends insufficiently scrubbed air outside and burns through the activated carbon far faster.

The third is discretion. Sound output rises sharply with rotation speed, so dropping a few increments is often enough to take an installation from audible in the hallway to genuinely unremarkable, with no meaningful loss of air exchange.

Installation: what to plan for

This is not a product you unbox and plug in between two sockets. It mounts on the wall, inside or immediately beside the grow room, at a height where you can read the display without contorting yourself. Choose a spot sheltered from splashes and direct humidity.

The connection to the EC fan must follow the manufacturer's guidance. If that kind of wiring is outside your comfort zone, bring in someone qualified — an indoor grow combines electricity, heat and moisture, and this is not the place to improvise.

Think about the cable run too. A controller sited somewhere convenient but far from the fan makes installation needlessly awkward. Positioning it near where the ducting enters the room is usually simplest.

Choosing the EC fan to go with it

Maintenance and service life

Electronic controllers need little upkeep, but they dislike dust and standing humidity. A dry dusting of the housing between crops is plenty; avoid liquid products on the fascia and display. On the fan side, impeller and housing gradually foul up — and a clean fan works better and more quietly at the same setting, which lets you wind the speed down a little further still.

Will this controller work with any extractor fan?

No. It is designed for EC-motor fans. On a conventional AC-motor extractor it will not perform its function. Check that your fan's specification explicitly states an EC motor — if you are unsure, contact us with the exact model reference and we will confirm.

Is it plug and play?

No, and it is worth knowing that before ordering. The controller mounts on the wall and must be wired to a compatible EC fan. It is not a box you slot between two mains sockets. If wiring is not within your skill set, plan for a qualified person to carry out the connection.

Does it regulate temperature or humidity automatically?

This controller sets extractor fan speed. It does not measure temperature or humidity by itself and will not trigger automation based on those readings. For sensor-driven automatic regulation you want a full environmental controller — we stock several.

Where should it be installed in the grow room?

On the wall at reading height, sheltered from splashes and direct humidity, and ideally near the fan to keep the cable run short. Somewhere you can reach without moving plants around will make life easier throughout the cycle.

What speed should I set my extractor to?

There is no universal figure: it depends on room volume, lighting power, whether a carbon filter is fitted and the growth stage. The sound method is to start low, watch temperature and humidity over 24 hours, then step up gradually until the climate is stable. An LCD readout is exactly what makes that process rigorous rather than approximate.
